Grant Gardiner competed in the Senior category. Unfortunately, he was the only gymnast in this age group, but he competed well on 4 apparatus. Grant has just got back into full time training after a shoulder injury, so he did not compete on Rings or Vault.
Brad McBride & Tom Defina competed in the Under 18 age group. They are also both injured, so opted to compete on fewer apparatus. Brad only went to do High Bar. Unfortunately he fell on his release and catch move, but repeated it successfully to the delight of the crowd & such was the quality of the rest of the routine, he won Gold! Tom also fell off the High Bar, but managed to still walk away with the Bronze. The rest of Tom’s competition went very well, picking up Golds on his other 3 apparatus – Floor, Pommels & P Bars. During the competition, Brad decided he would do Vault, and claimed Silver for his efforts.
Miki Chu was Woking’s only competitor in the Under 16 category. Also injured, Miki picked up medals on his 4 apparatus – Gold on Rings, Silver on Pommels, P Bars & High Bar. He also won the Bronze medal All Around!
Tobias Brewer & Tim McCarthy were our Under 14 competitors. Tobias won Gold on Floor & High Bar, Bronze on Pommels & Vault and Silver AA with a total score of 65.20 – a full set! Tim competed extremely well in his first competition for Woking, winning Gold on Rings and Silver on Pommels & Vault. Tim was just out of the AA medals, placing 4th with 60.70.
The Under 12 age group was the hottest competition of the day. Woking had 7 gymnasts competing. Jamie Lewis won all apparatus & AA with a score of 76.40. This in spite of a fall on Pommels, but he has such a difficult routine, nobody could catch him. Lorenzo Carrozzo competed well on Rings (Silver) and Vault (Bronze) to place 5th AA with 64.60. Jonty Mitchell also had a good day with Silver on Pommels & Vault and Bronze on High Bar & AA scoring 64.90. Leon McHugh didn’t have such a good day on this occasion scoring 55.60 AA. James Miller started his competition with a couple of falls on Rings & Vault, but picked himself up for Floor, where he won the Bronze medal. Our last 2 competitors were Jasper Smith-Gordon & Owen Turner. This was their 1st ever Voluntary competition, and they were competing against boys 2 years older. They both competed excellently with no falls, so we will expect them both to be in the medal hunt next year.
Congratulations to all the Woking Gymnasts & Coaches – that was quite a medal haul!
