The first age group was the Senior 16-18 with Timothy McCarthy and Alessandro Avanzi competing for Woking. Unfortunately Miki Chu fractured his ankle the week before the competition and had to withdraw. Timothy competed well scoring 68.30 finishing 13th. Alessandro competed in his first ever competition in England and made a few errors scoring 67.60 finishing 3rd in the Guest category.
The next round saw the Senior over 18 take centre stage. Woking had Tom Defina and Bradley McBride competing in their penultimate competition for Woking against the very best gymnasts in the World. Tom held his own on Pommels against Max Whitlock, Louis Smith MBE, Daniel Keatings, Sam Oldham to name just a few. Tom performed a good routine scoring 13.850 and finishing a very creditable 6th. Bradley went clean on High Bar scoring 12.40 finishing 10th.
On Sunday it was the Junior age categories turn with 58 gymnasts competing over 2 rounds of competition. Woking Gymnastics Club had Jamie Lewis, Lorenzo Carrozzo, James Miller, Jasper Smith-Gordon and Fraser Griffiths competing. Jamie had a poor start with 3 falls over the first 4 apparatus. However his class shone through in the end scoring 78.750 and finishing in 1st place almost 3 whole marks ahead of 2nd place. Jamie collected gold on Parallel Bars and High Bar and a Bronze on Floor. Lorenzo competed a number of new routines very well and scored 72.00 finishing in 11th. Jasper scored 67.40 finishing 25th, James 66.850, 26th and Fraser 63.650 finishing 36th.
Among the girls competition was Woking’s gymnast-Amber Stevens. It is not the easiest draw to start on Beam but she held her nerves and performed a clean routine to score 11.100. All this was followed by a beautiful floor routine, but unfortunately Amber did not perform with her full difficulties due to an injury. However, Amber finished on Bars with some new tricks and achieved a total of 29.050 for three apparatus.
Well done to all the gymnasts and coaches.
