London Open 2010 (Commonwealth Games Trial)

On Friday 12th and Saturday 13th March the Men’s London Open took place in Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham.  

Tom Defina competed in the Loveday Trophy on the Friday.  In a very strong under 18 age group, 14 year old Tom competed well with only a couple of unfortunate errors finishing a very respectable 23rd scoring 72.35.

Miki Chu competed on Saturday morning in the Clayton Bolt Shield.  Miki competed well on three apparatus and unfortunately fell on the others.  Finishing 29th and scoring 59.35.

Saturday afternoon saw the seniors take the stage.  Grant Gardiner was competing for Woking against 49 of the very best European gymnasts, including Olympic medallist Louis Smith and European silver medallist Daniel Keatings.  Grant performed superbly with stylish gymnastics finishing a very impressive 9th all round scoring 81.75.

The competition was also a trial for Grant to qualify for the Commonwealth Games for Wales.  He needed to score above 80.0, as he achieved a score of 81.75, he has booked his place at the games in Delhi later on in the year.

All the boys coaches are delighted with the results.  Head coach Simon Elliott said “It is a great achievement for Woking Gymnastics Club and Grant.  Grant has worked very hard and dedicated his life to the sport of gymnastics.  This is a result of his dedication and shows all of the younger gymnasts what can be achieved at a great club like Woking”.
